ToT: Ten Things You Need to Plan For

September 22, 2009

This week’s Ten on Tuesday is 10 Things You Need to Plan For. (See my previous ToT posts here.)

1. Kids – I’m not saying everyone does but it’s good to at least give it a little thought before hand or AT LEAST before they arrive. They can be expensive! ;)

2. Weddings - Depending on what kind of wedding you want, you’ll definitely have a lot of things to think out – where you want the ceremony, what kind of dress, how many people in your wedding party, etc.

3. Birthdays, or any type of party really – Most successful parties need some planning. You need to know how many people are coming, what kind of food you’ll be serving, whether you’ll have a theme or not and where you’ll be having it.

4. Vacations – Vacations have a lot of details that need planning like where you’re going to stay, what you’re going to do, how much money you’ll need, etc.

5. Big projects – Any type of big project, be it a research paper for school or your spring house cleaning, needs a little planning.

6. School/College – When you or your child is starting school, you will need a lot of planning for the classes, books, transportation and other things that come with education.

7. Moving – Moving can be a huge ordeal, whether it’s to a new house or to college. It’s nice to have a game plan.

8. A major purchase – When you’re considering a big purchase (be it a house, car, whatever) you have to plan so you can save up enough money.

9. Accidents/Catastrophes – You never know what’s going to happen in life. It usually pays to plan ahead for certain things, even if you think they’ll never happen – like a fire, flood, tornado, etc.

10. Christmas Shopping – If you have a big family or lots of people to buy for, it’s always good to plan ahead on your Christmas shopping.

Tot: Ten Things I Think Are Cool

September 15, 2009

This week’s Ten on Tuesday is about Ten Things I Think Are Cool. Pretty self explanatory, eh? So here’s a list of things that I currently think are pretty cool. Click the “More” link to see the rest of them. (To see previous Ten on Tuesday posts, go here.)

1. It should probably go without saying, but these little people are pretty awesome in my book…..my kids!

2. Caprica – From the makers of Battlestar Galactica, came this mini-series about the beginnings of BSG and the Cylons. I initially didn’t think I would care for it but I really enjoyed it. I’m excited to see the series on SyFy (although I hate to call them that!) when it comes out.

3. Facebook applications – I can’t help it, they’re too darn addicting. I’ll play just about anything – or at least try it. I love the farming games and I’ve found a new one called Roller Coaster Kingdom that’s also a lot of fun.

Note: Mine is much bigger than this, lol.

A Long Day’s Journey Into Weightloss

September 12, 2009

Being overweight puts you at higher risk for for health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, stroke and heart attack. With those health problems come the risk that you will have your life cut short. So the more overweight you are, the less life you are going to have to enjoy with your family & friends.

Fall Out Boy has a song that says, “You can only blame your problems on the world for so long…” We (meaning myself and overweight people all over the world) have reasons and excuses for our weight problems. And oftentimes they’re not always bad excuses – oftentimes they’re right. We’re big boned, we come from a family of big people, we’re weak, we’ve always been overweight, we’re not able to stay motivated, etc. But with these excuses comes the tendency to abuse them, to use them as a crutch and depend on them – and to think of more creative ones.

There’s also the danger of distractions and things that will cause us to procrastinate. For me, my computer & the internet are big time wasters. You know the Facebook applications? Yeah, I’ve added pretty much all of them. I surf the internet, jumping from one subject to the next. Everybody has their demons – for some it’s the television, reading, talking on the phone, sleeping, sewing or some other hobby.

In addition to being lazy and/or being distracted, there’s also the issue of food. Food can become a comfort for some people. They eat when they’re sad, mad, bored, confused, etc. They may not even realize they’re doing it but it becomes a way to help them cope with life.

19 and Counting!

September 3, 2009

One of the most popular posts on my blog is about the Duggar Family – perhaps you’ve heard of them? :) The family from Arkansas with 18 kids has a show on TLC that chronicles their life. With their eldest child & his wife expecting their first grandchild in October, Mrs. Duggar just recently announced that she & Mr. Duggar are expecting again! The internet has exploded with people giving their opinions, ranting and raving. I’ve been amazed at some of the responses.

As long as they are taking care of their children and raising them up well, who cares? It amazes me how some (not all) pro-choice women have been speaking out & treating Mrs. Duggar like dirt. If you support a woman’s right to do with her what her body what she wants, then why would knock her for doing what she wants with hers? I myself don’t agree with everything they believe but I think they’re great. I think it’s their choice to have children – and I do honestly think they love & cherish each one of their children.

Michelle Duggar says they’re recognized regularly thanks to the TLC show.

“We feel like it’s just an opportunity to encourage families to enjoy their children, enjoy children while they have them and realize that they are a gift from God,” she said. “That’s our prayer. This is an opportunity to just encourage others to value family and just enjoy the time you have with them.”

I know we probably don’t see everything that goes on in their lives, but from what I have seen I’m impressed. The kids all seem respectful and well mannered. They are all close and a lot of the things they do seem pretty typical. I love that she takes a personal interest in their education and that all the children are taught to play an instrument. I thought this schedule of a typical day in their lives was pretty neat – they spend time each night talking individually about their day & what’s going on in their lives. We’ll see what happens down the road but for the moment they all seem to be well adjusted. People comparing her to OctoMom and Jon & Kate amaze me – I can’t see the similarities at all. They’re not in it for the money or the fame. I admire their committment to their marriage and to their family. So once again, I’d love to hear your opinions & thoughts!
